In my view, Brexit proves that some
issues should not be decided by referendum. Referendums aim to give the
citizens of a society the balance of power when it comes to the implementation
of milestone legislations that will define (or redefine) those societies. I
believe that the totality of the population of a democracy needs a full and
secured access to information about the subject of a referendum, in order for
the people to forge their personal opinion before casting their vote. This
information should come from independent sources, freed from political partisanship
or economic interests. The current situation in our modern democracy is, in my
view, different. Indeed, it seems to me that the parties campaigning for one of
the proposals of a referendum do not hesitate to use any kind of information
and arguments, regardless of their source and veracity, in order to drag the
voters on their side. This leads to a lot of misinformation within the
population, an consequently, to the perversion of the democratic exercise that
is a referendum.
